camRade has become an indispensable name in the professional broadcast and film industry. In its more than 20 years, the originally Dutch brand has produced and sold products such as camera bags and rain covers (wetsuits), and it has become the consolidated world leader in the field of camera protection for the professional market.

[fulltext] =>

For camRade, the year 2022 will be marked by the launch of a new series of camera covers and rain covers for a wide range of applications.

Broadcast is alive and kicking

Despite the media landscape changing and large cameras being replaced by smaller camcorders, camRade continues to support the traditional and professional style of electronic news gathering (ENG) and electronic field production (EFP). This is where camRade’s roots lie and what it is good at. After working intensively together with various broadcasters, rental companies, manufacturers and professional production crews, camRade is proud to introduce four new covers to the professional market.

New rainCovers for (live) production

The first in line is the rainCover ENG/EFP. It is a universal cover for a wide range of Sony, Panasonic, Blackmagic URSA, Grass Valley, Hitachi, Ikegami, and JVC broadcast cameras. This rain protection cover is suitable for shoulder camera work but is also great while the camera is attached on a VCT-plate, tripod, pedestal, or any other camera support solution.

At the same time, the rainCover 1X1 has been developed, which is a universal rain cover that ensures that not only the camera but also the light source is protected when the shoot conditions change. The durability and unique features of the rainCover 1X1 will protect your investment in a way that plastic bags and other cheap covers cannot.

Reinvented “body armours” for Panasonic & Sony shoulder cameras

The camRade camSuit series was redesigned in late 2021. This series has been part of the camRade line-up since the beginning and has been very popular over the years. Although new models have been added in the recent years, the features and appearance of the camSuit have remained the same.

In order to remain at the forefront of what is popularly called the “camera body armour” market, camRade’s design team has developed the S1 and P2. They consist of two black camera covers, made of 1000D Cordura® fabric, covering the majority of the Panasonic and Sony shoulder cameras that are commonly used. The camCovers protect against scratches resulting from daily wear and tear, increase the lifespan of the camera body and ensure it remains in perfect condition. The built-in camRade rainProtector helps protect the camcorder whenever the weather turns, or dust is kicked up.

The camCover S1 is a replacement for the camRade Sony camSuits and has been designed and tested on the latest Sony PXW-line of shoulder cameras, including the PXW-X400, PXW-X500, PXW-Z450 and PXW-Z750 models. The S1 is also compatible with the older, but very commonly used PMW-320, PMW- 350, PMW-400 and PMW-500 cameras. In addition, based on the very few changes Sony has been making to outer camera bodies in recent years, it may also be the perfect cover for future generations of shoulder cameras. The S1’s new companion is the camCover P2, which has been reengineered for the latest Panasonic Shoulder-Mount Camera models AJ-CX4000 and AJ-PX5000.

Both the new rainCovers and the two new camCovers are now available at authorised camRade resellers worldwide. Other new camRade innovations will be announced at various times throughout 2022. Please locate and feel free to contact the closest reseller for more information about camRade.

    [introtext] =>

Due to the ongoing health concerns and safety measures presented by November’s wave of COVID-19 infections, Aspectra B.V. has unfortunately decided to withdraw as an exhibitor from this year’s International Broadcasting Convention.

[fulltext] =>

It is nothing in comparison to the pain and misery that COVID-19 has caused worldwide, but we are extremely disappointed that we will not be attending an event that has delivered great success and enjoyment for several years. This sentiment is shared by our partners at the brands we represent: Camgear, camRade and PAG.

Despite the fact that IBC management has insisted on participation, while other key exhibitors have already withdrawn, we have concluded that the measures they and the Dutch government have imposed make it impossible for us to contribute as an exhibitor to this major broadcast event.

At the moment, The Netherlands, the home country of Aspectra B.V., has a greater number of COVID-19 infections than other countries and the pressure on hospitals is increasing enormously. Although we discourage anyone to travel to Amsterdam at this time, we will keep a close eye on developments over the next three weeks and decide whether some of our team members will be present in Amsterdam as visitors of the show.

We will remain in close contact with our partners by means of digital interaction. All product launches planned for IBC will be postponed until January of next year. We are looking forward to participating in events and meeting you in-person once again at some point in the future.

With best regards,

The Aspectra team

    [title] => Cameraman René Lunshof reviews the Mini PAGlink V-Mount batteries
    [alias] => cameraman-rene-lunshof-reviews-the-mini-paglink-v-mount-batteries
    [introtext] =>

Anyone who uses V-Mount batteries knows: Batteries are expensive and the more power they have, the more expensive they become.

[fulltext] =>

Chargers are also expensive, and often large and bulky. If you travel a lot as a cameraman, you know the feeling that you prefer keeping the charger in your hand luggage. If your suitcase gets lost, at least you still have your batteries and charger. But as they are large and unwieldy, they fit poorly in your hand luggage. PAG has the solution for many of these issues!

They have released a Micro-Charger and a new series of smaller, handy batteries. The small and handy Micro-Charger can be easily slid onto the contact pins of the new V-Mount Mini PAGlink (MPL) batteries. The Micro-Charger fully charges one 50Wh PAGlink battery in just two hours. Aas the MPL batteries can be stacked, you can charge 4 batteries at the same time, but it takes a bit longer. How handy is that! Other battery brands can also be charged with the Micro-Charger, but then you can only charge one battery at a time.

PAGLink Mini 4 story

In addition to the normal power adapter, the Micro-Charger also includes DC power leads with vehicle cigarette lighter and USB connectors, so you can charge your batteries on the go. Almost everyone owns a smartphone or tablet with a USB charger, so this is where the USB connector can be useful. However, you can only charge with an adapter that comes with 2Wh. If you use one with less output, you will get an error. Also, charging via USB is a lot slower than normal. But sometimes something is better than nothing… Conversely, I also use the USB connection to charge my Macbook, phone or tablet. A USB connector, not very special I hear you think, but the thing I really love is that you can slide off the USB connector and use another output connector unit instead. Available output units on the PAG website are D-Tap, USB (2A), Lemo (2-pin), Hirose (4-pin) and 2.1mm (PP90). I can imagine there will be more options available in the future.

"...when the stacked batteries are almost running out, you can change one or two without having to restart your device!"

In addition to the charger, I also used the new MPL50 (50Wh) & MPL99 (99Wh) batteries from PAG. The first thing I noticed while unboxing was the compact size of the batteries. The difference in height with my other, more traditional batteries is sometimes more than 5 cm! The MPL50 is a small, thin, almost cute, and very practical battery. The MPL99 is twice as thick, but has the same height, so they can be nicely stacked together. I must say that my other batteries have 260Wh capacity, because of the many more battery cells in it, compared to one MPL battery. But this is where the stacking comes in handy! By stacking two or three MPL batteries you can create 300Wh capacity yourself 😉. An additional advantage is that, when the stacked batteries are almost running out, you can change one or two without having to restart your device!

At first, I doubted the MPL50 battery. It is too small and low on capacity to feed my camera and it would run out pretty fast. But what I did was, I used it to feed my LED panel, charge my phone and tablet on the go. It takes up so little space, and I always have a spare battery with me.

The MPL99 is simply GREAT. I use it on my FS7 camera, both my LED panels, but also on my Dejero EnGo. The batteries are quite expensive, but I noticed that for some reason, better quality cells, perhaps, the PAG’s last longer than my other batteries. The data display on the MPL battery shows that power is not even halfway down, while my other batteries are already running out.

My conclusion is, that in practice, I use the MPL50 batteries for my accessories and only the MPL99 for charging my FS7 camera. Of course by stacking a couple of batteries, you willl have more power to charge a device which ‘eats’ more energy.

Charging with the Micro-Charger is not that fast, but it’s great some times. The charger is very compact and fits easily in any bag, ideal for traveling or unexpected moments. Ideally have a full size charger at base for rapid charging.

    [title] => PAG launches Mini PAGlink V-Mount Batteries

    [introtext] =>

PAG is happy to announce the launch of its new V-Mount Mini PAGlink Batteries, available in flight-friendly 50Wh and 99Wh capacities.

[fulltext] =>

Mini PAGlink has all the benefits of PAG’s established intelligent linking battery technology in a more compact and lightweight format. The batteries are ideal for use with smaller cameras, but also reduce the weight for larger camera set-ups. In addition, Mini PAGlink is the first battery series to feature output units that can be swapped by the user. Linking batteries enables you to control the capacity and the weight of your camera power source to suit the application, and makes it easier to travel with all the power you need.

The new, 50Wh capacity MPL50 weighs just 350g and has a low-profile design, ideal for handheld camcorders, director’s monitors or audio equipment. It features outputs to power the accessories broadcasters require, providing a single power source for the set-up. The MPL50 has one fixed 12V D-Tap output, and a USB (5V 2A) unit that can be swapped by the user for other output units including: Hirose, Lemo or D-Tap. The new 99Wh MPL99 is an ideal, lightweight power source for larger, broadcast or digital cinema cameras and accessories. It features dual D-Tap outputs, as well as a swappable USB.

Unlike other ‘mini’ or ‘micro’ format batteries, Mini PAGlink offers intelligent linking for discharge or charging. PAG’s patented digital technology allows Mini PAGlink V-Mount batteries, of any capacity, in any state-of-charge, to be linked, combining their capacities for longer run-time, or an increased current draw of up to 12A. Batteries can be added or hot-swapped to ensure continuous shooting. Sharing the current demand between batteries prolongs their overall life and provides a better return on investment. PAG guarantees the batteries for 2 years, with unlimited cycles during that period.

Mini PAGlink batteries feature one of the highest-quality Li-Ion cells available, tested by the NASA Battery Workshop for their mission to Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons.

It was found to provide the most favourable combination of energy and cycling stability, and the best capacity retention after 500 cycles out of all the commercially available cells NASA tested.

PAG’s new modular battery design makes Mini PAGlink batteries fully-serviceable. The cell-pack, can be replaced by local, authorised service centres, whilst maintaining compliance with UN standards and IATA flight safety regulations. Other battery modules can be reused, contributing towards greater sustainability.

The ergonomic case design is combined with a robust and flexible construction, to survive the harshest working conditions. It features a ‘Soft-Touch’ coated outer band for safer handling and added resilience.

Other features include a high-resolution numeric display of run-time, capacity and battery data; and digital communication to display capacity in the camera VF/LCD.

Batteries can be charged stacked using single, two or four position V-Mount PAGlink chargers, as well as those of most other manufacturers, making Mini PAGlink batteries versatile and economic to integrate.

Mini PAGlink 50Wh & 99Wh batteries are also available in the Gold Mount format.

Stuart Howells is an English Freelance Camerman who specialises in ENG camera work. He does a lot of camera operating for BBC News as well as the APP Sup World Tour. He has been travelling locally within the UK and tested our camRade travelMate Large.

[fulltext] =>

Since getting the travelMate from camRade I had big travel plans to go to Maldives, Cape Verde, Hamburg and France. I was about to board a plane when Lockdown hit the whole world and life as we knew it came crashing to a hault.I decided not to fly and a few days later the UK closed its borders.

Quite often when travelling with lots of kit, as a videographer you always travel with lots of kit bag, you have seperate bags for tripods, audio equipment, cameras and lenses, but with the travelMate Large, it makes things easier to get a lot of gear into one bag.

You can throw it over your shoulder, yes with a lot of kit in it's heavy, but this makes it ideal as my go-to camera bag. I have used it in a farmers field - where I couldn't use the wheels and within seconds was able to use the carry straps and put the bag on my back.

 Stuart Howells TMLarge blogimage02

I find the large side pockets so useful to put cables or spare batteries in, the things you need quickly without needing to open up the bag. As my job involves various different locations and shoots I have to pack different things almost every job I go on.

This bag allows me to minimise that and basically keep everything all the time which is nice to not have to get rid of things for those 'just in case moments'. And those moments in the dark when you are scrambling around for a light to find a memory card or lens filter...forget that. The built in moveable light comes on without needing to press any button and just works. It's amazing. As soon as you open the bag in a dark room the light is there and you can find what you're looking for. It saves time and as I work along it really, really makes a difference to my shoot time.

Although I haven't been able to get on a plane yet with this bag...working at home it allows me to have everything handy in one place and the pop out handle and wheels make it a dream to use on the pavement and walking no matter how heavy my gear is. The bag is tough and durable and really holds up well when used as a professional camera bag!

    [title] => Part 2: Stefan Czich about the perfect monitor, trends and what to expect in the future
    [alias] => part-2-stefan-czich-about-the-perfect-monitor-trends-and-what-to-expect-in-the-future
    [introtext] =>

Looking into the future, what can expect from TVLogic monitors and monitors trends in general? To answer this question we talked with Stefan Czich, who has worked with many different broadcast and manufacturing companies for more than 20 years.

[fulltext] =>

Stefan Czich has worked for more than 20 years in the production side of the industry and more recently in post-production. As an international Sales manager, he has worked with many different broadcast and manufacturing companies. Working with a lot of different customers he knows their daily challenges in the rapidly changing industry.

Keeping in mind the challenges of working outside, what would be most important things to look for in a monitor? Stefan Czich: ‘Traditionally the idea has been to keep the light off the screen with a hood around the monitor. But that is not always possible, so hight brightness is now an issue. For people working outside high brightness monitors are becoming more and more popular. The TVLogic F-7H offers an astounding 3,600 nits maximum brightness.

Another issue is the weight of the monitor. It must be lightweight, but at the same time it also needs to be robust. There are very nice designs out there with plastic cases and they are very lightweight, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they will survive the knocks and bumps. Particularly if you are talking about the rental industry, kit can take a hammering.

Stefan02 F10A 3

If we look at the TVLogic brand: their small 5-inch monitors have long been the standard. They all use light weight metal cases. There are sexier designs out there, but they are just not as robust. Robustness is one of the key things you should be thinking of when buying a monitor.’

‘If a monitor goes for a repair, it is not earning money.’

‘If you have a monitor that is maybe not so streamlined, but it is robust and it is constantly in the hire market, it is a better monitor for you. If it is your own monitor, then that is even more important. TVLogic monitors are designed to work in the real world.’

‘The real difference is when you come to use the product. Then you realise the connectively is very good.’

‘Once you have a signal going in then you find that there are lot of features built into the monitor. Things like time code, colour peaking, zebra and a whole lot of other things, that really help you use the monitor on a live production.’

Trends & future perspective
Looking into the future what do you think we can expect from TVLogic monitors and monitors trends in general?
Stefan Czich: ‘It’s really difficult to predict the long-term future. A little while ago 3D was all the rage and now that is forgotten about for another 20 years, probably.

What is expected in the short/medium term is more of the compact monitors, so they work well with new cameras. More high brightness monitors, and obviously UHD and 4K are becoming the new standard. We’ve got 8K video coming soon, but how far way that is exactly, is very difficult to predict. But it will come.

Another big trend is the move to IP production. All the outside broadcast trucks built in the UK recently have been IP based. BBC Cardiff goes on-air shortly, that will be an IP based station. TVLogic are expanding their range of monitors with SFP inputs for IP signals’

‘Interfacing easily with IP signals into monitors or other equipment that you are using, will be become more and more important.’

‘The TVLogic case designs are changing a little bit. Traditionally from 7 inches upwards, TVLogic have used a quite bulky case. It has been really robust, but it is a little chunky for modern use. Using different materials, we can get a smaller form factor for the monitor case. More suitable for modern, lighter and smaller cameras while still retaining a robust design.'

TVL F 10A 4 Stefan‘The ability to use your monitor with any camera that you are given, is a big plus.’

'The TVLogic multi-format monitors are monitors that connect with SD and HD in most popular formats, both digital & analogue. As we move forward, we find log inputs & UHD/4K have become standard. We see HDMI & HDMI-2 in wide use in broadcast & cine production Any camera output, for a broadcast camera or a DSLR cameras will feed into these monitors’

    [introtext] =>

As social distancing has become part of our daily life since the pandemic outbreak of COVID-19, we’re all required to learn more about covering distances and staying connected.

[fulltext] =>

Probably more than we’d care to, but our situation has changed. We need to be flexible and look for solutions and opportunities.

Fortunately, people are resilient and resourceful, and we are all in this together. Like many of you, we are looking for possibilities and trying to imagine how our business will take its form in the near future.

In this context of social distancing, we already have a good solution available from our partner Crystal Video Wireless (CVW). They offer crystal clear video transmission with zero latency with their Pro Series. This way you can keep a safe distance between yourselves, while being able to transfer real time HD video signals from one transmitter to several receivers at once.

 CVW CONCERT IN VIETNAM PRO200 4

The Pro Series is available in four kits complete with transmitter, receiver, antennas, cables and more. The video transmitting ranges vary from 200 meters (655ft) with the Pro 200 kit, up to 800 meters (2625ft) with the Pro 800 kit & Pro 800Plus kit. The kit is also available in a 300 metre range with the Pro 300Plus.

The wireless video transmitters all have plugins for HDMI, SDI, DC and mini USB. There is also an option for a V-mount connection. With the tough yet lightweight design, the units are easy to take with you, everywhere you want and are ideal for live broadcasting.

One of the many outstanding features is the built-in fan. This smart fan, protecting the device against overheating, turns off automatically during camera activity to guarantee noise free shooting.

Let’s be honest, when you are able to go out and do your job, you want to do it in the safest possible way and with the best possible result. Check our website for more information and find out how these kits can help you improve your workflow!

Stay safe!

    [alias] => looking-after-your-batteries-during-lockdown
    [introtext] =>

If you are currently unable to work as a result of the global pandemic, then you need to make sure that your Li-Ion camera batteries are in good health when it becomes possible to return to work.

[fulltext] =>

Batteries naturally self-discharge over time. If their state-of-charge is less than 10% before an extended period of inactivity, they could become difficult for you to recover.

It is also undesirable for batteries to be 100% charged for storage as this can damage the cells and lead to a shorter overall life.

PAG recommends that you charge your Li-Ion batteries to 50% (anywhere between 20% and 80% is desirable) prior to long term storage of more than 2 weeks. PAGlink batteries should also be in an unlinked state during this period.

PAGlink Sleep Mode for Storage

PAGlink Batteries can be put into Sleep Mode for long term storage, using the battery display menu system. It shuts down the internal electronics and greatly reduces battery self-discharge. The battery can be woken-up with 2 presses of the display button.

Please refer to Section 6 of the User Guide for PAGlink Batteries via the links below:

PAGlink V-Mount Sleep Mode Instructions

PAGlink Gold Mount Sleep Mode Instructions

PAGlink Gold Mount Batteries have an automatic sleep mode feature that initiates after 2 weeks of inactivity.

To maintain good battery capacity, it is beneficial to cycle batteries every 6 weeks (discharge followed by a full-charge).

The PAG team wishes you all good health and a safe return to work when that day finally arrives.
