This year Rotterdam has the honour to welcome Filmapalooza, the World Final of the 48 Hour Film Project. We’re proud to support this festival which helps filmmakers from all over the world connect with each other.

[fulltext] =>

The 48 Hours Film Project is characterized to be a wild and sleepless weekend in which you and a team make a movie - write, shoot, and edit - in just 48 hours. Mark Ruppert, who initiated this project in 2001,  opened the Filmapalooza last Tuesday night. Followed by a speech from Said Kasmi, city councillor of education, culture and tourism in Rotterdam.

Kasmi tells the story of Abraham Icek Tuschinski, known to be the first real business tycoon in Rotterdam, who started an empire of Cinemas for everyone and anyone. His vision was that if you work hard and treat everyone with respect, you’re able to create great things. Ruppert emphasized that this certainly applies to the filmmaking teams of this film project too. With this great message the 19th edition of the festival is off to a good start.

After editions in Los Angeles, Seattle, Paris and Orlando, it is Rotterdam's turn to welcome more than 400 international filmmakers. All these creative teams won a local edition of the 48 Hour Film Project somewhere in the world in the previous year.

To honour these winners and to choose the best 48 Hour film of the year, the World Final is organized under the title Filmapalooza. Every year editions of the event take place in 130 cities spread out over all continents. The competition produces more than 4500 short films annually, 130 of which therefore win a local edition.

During this five-day festival, participants of the winning teams come together to meet each other, watch all films, attend workshops, celebrate and of course find out who made the best film of the year. We wish all filmmakers a good time exploring Rotterdam and connecting with other filmmakers!

    [title] => Part 1 Expert article: Stefan Czich about working in the broadcast and post-production industry and the importance of monitor support
    [alias] => part-1-expert-article-stefan-czich-about-working-in-the-broadcast-and-post-production-industry-and-the-importance-of-monitor-support
    [introtext] =>

Working with a lot of different customers he knows their daily challenges in this rapid changing industry.

[fulltext] =>

Stefan Czich has been working for more than 20 years in the production side of the broadcast and television industry and more recently in post-production. As an international Sales manager he worked for different broadcast and manufacturing companies. Working with a lot of different customers he knows their daily challenges in this rapid changing industry.

‘During the years I had the opportunity to work with a lot of great people and it has been real fun.’ About the question, why he chose this field of work, he gave a short answer:

‘To be honest with you… I needed a job. A company local to me, a broadcast distributor, selling Fujinon lenses at the time, was looking for a technical sales-person. I was originally trained as an electronics engineer.'

‘Photography was my hobby for a very long time. As a lens reseller I fitted the bill quite nicely.’

‘At the time I thought: It pays okay, the company car is dreadful, it is a job that I will do for about 3 months and then I’ll find something that I enjoy more. The very first week that I was there, we ended up fitting infrared cameras on top of the main studio cameras, at the big ITV studios in London. The idea was to film a game show that was set in the dark. It was lit only with infrared. That was quite novel technology at the time.’

‘It was hosted by Julian Clary, who is tremendous fun, but quite risky. The show never did well as a program within UK. But internationally in particular places like Italy and Australia, it ran for many series and it was very popular.’

‘Partway through rigging the cameras onto the lenses, I bumped into the producer. He was walking through the studios with a big box of rubber earwigs and spiders, things like that. I thought: what on earth are those for? He said: Well they are for the audience. At some point while the audience is sitting there in complete darkness, they ask a question: What would it be like if a creepy crawly fell on your head? Then they release these things from the lighting gantry.’

'Absolute pandemonium. I thought at that stage, it could be quite fun working in this industry and so I have stayed.’

The importance of monitor support
For Stefan it all began in the production side of the industry, more recently he worked in the post-production side of the industry. What stayed the same for him is advising customers about the best monitor for their needs.

Stefan06

                                                                       F-10A : 10’’ Full HD HDR field monitor with HDMI 2.0 & HDCP 2.2

What most people don’t notice when buying a monitor or any product, are the things that aren’t in the box.’

‘If you buy a good product, you will get a nice product in the box and you get it for a reasonable price. But if you buy a really good product, it’s got backing behind it. With a technical product, you always want to ask the question: do you get free software and firmware updates? This way it will always work at peak performance. If there is a problem with the product: what happens? Do you have decent warranty support? These are the sort of things that people, who just buy at a low price, often lose out on.’

‘The first and foremost feature to take notice of when buying a monitor, is picture quality.

‘A thing to take notice of: Do you have the right resolution and are the colours correct? Does it show the whole picture? Some of the low-cost monitors don’t under scan properly, you actually can’t see the whole picture. That can lead to framing issues or mic poles creeping into shot. That’s one of the key features everyone should keep in mind buying a new monitor.'

'Beyond that, the most important features will depend on what you are doing with a monitor. If you’re working outside, high brightness is important. If you’re working in a grading suite, really accurate colour reproduction is more important.’

Shifting customer needs
‘Over the years technology and the needs of customers have changed a lot compered to let’s say 15 years ago,when I started selling TVLogic.The big thing that I noticed was the change to the flat screen. It’s a lot smaller and lighter for any given screen size and much more portable.’

‘Because we moved from CRT technology to LCD, the products are much more stable. You don’t need realignment every time you move them. We moved from standard definition very quickly to HD and UHD is now becoming the standard for production.’

    [title] => travelMate Series: 5 Essential Built-in Travel Hacks for a Great and Safe Journey
    [alias] => travelmate-series-5-essential-built-in-travel-hacks-for-a-great-and-safe-journey
    [introtext] =>

camRade recently introduced the new travelMate series. This series is created to accompany you on your adventures, wherever these may take you.

[fulltext] =>

Taking into account the challenges travellers face going on the road with a camera and accessories, the new line has 5 built-in smart features.

The smallest one of the three, the travelMate 360 is created to carry on board most airplanes and fits the overhead compartment. Its strong but lightweight padding allows this bag to carry cameras with a maximum length of 45 cm/ 17.7 inches.

Suited for professional cameras up to 52 cm/ 20.5 inches, is the travelMate Large. This is an ultra-strong wheeled bag with telescopic trolley handle, as well as a super comfortable backpack. The third bag of the new series is the travelMate XL. This bag provides extreme flexibility in safe transportation of your camera and extended accessory kits (with a maximum length of 75 cm/ 29.5 inches).

CAM TM RANGE WEB NAMES

1. Wheels

Making travelling as easy as possible all the new bags in the series have wheels. The travelMate 360 has 4 rotating wheels and an extendable trolley handle. If room is limited, the rotating wheels with a 360° radius can be detached to minimize the outer measurements of the bag. The travelMate Large and XL both have an extendable trolley handle and 2 rugged wheels.

2. Backpack straps

For flexible transportation at any given moment, the two largest bags come with backpack straps. These padded straps and waist band will give you great carrying comfort and lumbar support. During travels the straps can be safely secured behind the hide away cover.

3. Led light

When you are searching for an item in your bag this feature will come in handy. Every bag is supplied  with a complimentary LED light with motion sensor that lights up as soon as you open up the bag. This light comes in a transparent pouch with zipper, that allows you to place it anywhere inside the bag.

4. Removable dividers

One of the smart gimmicks added to these bags are the removable dividers. The soft-padded interior includes removable dividers with extra wide hook and loop fasteners for better adhesion to the fabric. This makes it easy to arrange the main compartment into sections to fit to your personal requirements. The straps on the side of the main compartment flap, prevent it from falling completely open.

5. Material

Carrying you camera and keeping your camera safe can be a challenge. With this challenge in mind the designer choose for water-resistant 1000 denier Cordura® exterior and YKK® zippers. The fabric is strong and has an excellent resistance to abrasion. The soft-padded interior offers protection against scratches.

    [title] => Part 2 Review: The NextoDI NPS-10, a superfast all-in-one on location backup hub
    [alias] => part-2-review-the-nextodi-nps-10-a-superfast-all-in-one-on-location-backup-hub
    [introtext] =>

In part two of my review, I would like to tell you more about operating the NPS-10 and my pros and cons.

[fulltext] =>

Operating the NPS-10
Every control on the NPS-10 works with one button, which might take some time to get used to. The moment you put a card in the NPS-10, it scans the card directly. It even recognizes whether the data is new or already backed up. Then it will give you the option to copy everything or check if there are new files and only copy those. In the past my backup workflow consisted of formatting to prevent duplicates. Now I can quickly backup data from different cameras and automatically store it in separate folders which update with only newly added files, if you wish so..

For a quick data check on the card or internal SSD you can preview the footage on the screen. Especially if you backed up multiple cards, it gives you an insight into which card it was. You can copy or update four cards at the same time. In combination with the sync option, the NPS-10 can quickly copy from its own internal SSD and update to an external HDD or SSD.

SandervanIersel 7 web

Pros and cons
The NPS-10 is a small flexible device with a superfast transfer speed. Thanks to the advanced options in terms of updates and syncing with verifications against data corruption, you can safely leave your backup workflow to this ingenious device. It will transfer data from different memory cards with great ease. You can leave your NPS-10 transferring data in your bag while you are doing other things. To determine their lifespan, you can also check your SSDs on bad sectors. This way you know in advance whether you might want to replace a card or a hard drive.

Unfortunately NPS-10 is not completely weatherproof. The question is whether after longer use the internal mechanism will stay clean if I take it outside a lot. The control knob isn’t that intuitive (but this might change when I’ve owned the device for a while). I also noticed that with compressed codecs such as XAVC and AVCHD the NPS-10 is having a hard time with a frame rate of around 4 to 6fps. With ProRes and DNxHD, the frame rate is higher with 30 to 20 fps.

With the sync option the NPS-10 can copy data from the internal SSD to the extremal HDD/SSD. For ease and speed in the workflow, I can recommend choosing a SSD instead of an HDD. The reason for this is that some of the HDDs do not have their own power source or need phantom power which cannot be delivered from the NPS-10's USB host.

Conclusion
For those who can't afford to lose their footage and can’t spare the time to invest in a good backup workflow, the NPS-10 is an ideal solution. It simplifies and reduces the number of actions for making a good backup. It makes it very easy to transfer your data in an organized way. The NPS-10 is not perfect with its limited protection cover. But let’s face it, people don’t toss around their lenses either and people take them everywhere as well. This device can definitely unburden you and gives you a lot of time and focus back on your shooting days.

Regardless of how large your project is, safeguarding your footage is an important part of it. Whether you have a one-man band, a production crew, or a large production house/newsroom, the NPS-10 can help you with a good backup workflow. What this may look like? You can read it in my next article. If you want know more about my first impressions and features you can read the first part of my review.

Time is scarce on shooting days. Fortunately, there are solutions such as the NPS-10 that can save a lot of your time. Curious about this backup device? Sander van Iersel shares his review in this article.

[fulltext] =>

In my previous article I described the most underrated workflow in media production: the backup workflow. I explained why this workflow is often not working properly. The answer: time and effort. Resources which are scarce on shooting days. Fortunately, there are solutions such as the NPS-10. This device automates many steps in the backup process and ensures that some of your gear (and perhaps an extra crewmember) can stay at home.

First impressions
The NPS-10 is the size of a slightly thicker external HDD. Initially it reminded me of an old MP3 player with the small screen and the rotary knob on the side. But after a few test transfers I found out what a small powerhouse this backup hub actually is.

The NPS-10 allows you to copy multiple cards simultaneously at high speed (350MB /s). For example: copying two SD cards, one CFast and one microSD card to an internal disk, HDD or SSD. This ensures that the laptop can stay at home. The smart features in the software will make your backup process powerful and reliable during production.

Construction
To ensure that the NPS-10 can easily be transported, the device is equipped with a light metal housing (200g without SSD). Every unit comes with a rubber protection cover to help reduce the chance of damage during daily use.

SandervanIersel 5 web

Each of the sides have been utilized to allow as much IO to be available in such a small unit. For instance on top of the NPS-10 there is a slot for a CF, CFast or XQD/CFexpress memory card with a small protection cover.On the left side there is a control button and on the right side there is a microSD slot and two SD slots. These slots however do not have a protection cover, making them vulnerable for dust and other outdoor conditions.

At the bottom there is a USB slot for connecting a USB external drive or a USB memory card reader. Also at the bottom there is a USB Type-C slot, used to charge the product or connect to a computer (4000mAH, 2 hour usage time). You can also find a standard sized screw hole to attach the NPS-10 to your rigging.

A 2.5 ”HDD or SSD with SATA connection can be installed as internal storage by removing a screw from the back. The HHD/SSD is not standard included with the unit. When used with multiple SSD’s this could allow for an efficient change of storage units. Behind this backplate you can see the circuit of the NPS-10, something to keep in mind when shooting outdoors or non-favorable conditions.

Features
The most important feature for me is the flexibility that this small unit allows. Using an SSD, the NPS-10 reaches a copy speed from 350Mb/s (this is approximately 100GB in 10 minutes at peak performance). This performance decreases with the use of an HHD, so you should choose you storage medium with care. The height of the speed depends on which medium source you use and which version of the NPS-10 you have. There are three versions: the XQD/CFexpress version, the CFast version and the CF version. Each of these options also have two SD slots, one microSD slot, one USB port and one USB-C port.

Want to know how to reduce the risk of losing data? Director and producer Sander van Iersel shares his tips for a successful backup workflow in this article.

[fulltext] =>

Whether it took months of planning or you quickly gathered your gear this morning, now it’s time for action! During a shooting day there are a lot of creative choices you have to make. Therefore the nitty-gritty processes like signing a quitclaim and doing a continuity check often shift to the background. There is however a workflow which often starts too late and can even have disastrous consequences when ignored: the backup workflow.

The moment you lose your data, you have no excuse towards your customers. In some cases the recordings have been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. For this reason you cannot afford to have no backup.

A drawer full of disks
During my career I came across many creative professionals who deal very differently with making a safe back-up. Whether it is a central NAS, a whole service room or a draw with plastic drives with sticky notes on them. A lot of creatives think they have a good backup system but when I tell them that they are at high risk they are startled.

One backup is no backup
Regardless which data medium you use, your data doesn’t have eternal life, even if you don’t use your hard disk at all. In fact most hard disks do not like it, when they are not used on a regular basis.
Therefore I recommend to make three copies of all your active data:

  • One work disk on which you have your current project. Here you can make adjustments and work towards an export.
  • One backup where you have quick access to, in case of deleting something from your work disk or when your work disk has an error.
  • An off-location backup, so that if something disastrous happens to your workplace, your data is safe.

 Discover the secret of a successful backup workflow1

Also a smart way to be extra safe, is doubling your backup automatically in a raid 1 configuration. For example: you can use NAS and software like hedge to migrate all data in an organized way. There are also a lot of services where you can upload your data online. This way you considerably reduce the risk of data loss.

The chaos of productions
Most of the professionals that I know, have some good solutions for making a backup in their post-production phase. But at this stage it is already too late. The need for a safe backup actually begins earlier, on the moment that you want to transfer you data from your camera. Often I see crew members bumbling with their cards on location. One laptop on which everything is saved internally and everything is saved through the finder program on a mac laptop. This results in a card that is formatted too early and a folder that is copied incorrectly.

The backup process during production takes a lot of time, there has to be space for a laptop with power and all the disks. This can be very time consuming for a full day of shooting. If you want to do your backups in a safe way during production, then this must be tackled by a digital imaging technician. When there is no D.I.T. present and you want to make a backup on location as easy and safe as possible there are some things you can do in preparation:

  • Think about which codecs and data-rates you want to use for the day. This way you can predict how much data you are going to use.
  • Then estimate how much storage space you need and be sure that it fits on your disk. Take the double amount with you for the backup.
  • Calculate the data transfer time per card and put time in the schedule for this.
  • Prepare the locations for the footage with names and folders in, for example: Post-Haste.
  • Set up automation of your copy software (e.g. Carbon Copy Cloner and Hedge) in advance. This way you only have to press one button when a card needs to be unloaded.
  • Tell your DP that he or she cannot format the cards on location.

 Sander 6

It is important to have a good workflow during and after a shooting day. This way the preparations you have done will not go to waste. Some things to consider:

  • You can transport the hard disks separately. In two different bags with two different crew members. Or you can leave one disk with a DP when you are shooting several days.
  • Only format your cards when there is a backup of a disk at the office in the central backup system.
  • Leave your raw footage on the disks and only erase the disk if you need it for another project or when the current project is ready to be archived.

Automated backups on location
Now I hear you thinking, this is a lot to arrange altogether. Not something you like to do if you want to spend your time doing creative things. Yet no professional can escape making a safe backup.However, I think that making on-site backups doesn’t have to be a hassle. In the past few weeks I tested a device that can automate the whole back-up workflow with a high speed. This way you still have time for the other important activities on the shooting day. If you want know more about this device, read my next article about my review of the NPS-10, an ultra-fast backup hub in pocket size.

September 4, 2019 - Aspectra announced the newly signed distribution agreement with wireless-equipment manufacturer Shenzhen Crystal Video Technology Co., LTD.

Under the terms of the agreement, Aspectra will employ its sales, marketing and service expertise to distribute the full CVW Swift, Pro Series & BeamLink product portfolio in European and Middle Eastern countries.

Besides offering products supporting the transmission of HD wireless video based on uncompressed technology, CVW has now a developed a new Beamlink series utilizing Beamforming technology. It enables Multi-channel wireless video transmission with ultra low latency for a wide range of applications and markets. Compared with existing products, Beamlink series can transmit video/audio, camera control data and tally signal in one RF channel and also has significant advantages in transmission distance and anti-interference ability. This entrepreneurial mentality of CVW is what caught the attention of Aspectra who were looking for a partner to expand their activities in this area of expertise.

"We’re very pleased we’ve reached yet another agreement with an upcoming star in the industry. We believe the current product range, technologies and vision of CVW are connecting seamlessly with the mission of Aspectra”, says Thomas Raadgeep, COO of Aspectra. “With the representation of Crystal Video Wireless, our brand portfolio is becoming more and more complete”.

During IBC, Aspectra will display a selection of CVW’s products on their booth 12.B30, while the full line-up will be shown at the CVW booth (11.B26) in hall 11.
